To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario
Electrify GO Trains Now / Build Noise Barrier Walls
Whereas
- Metrolinx documents obtained by the Official Opposition through Freedom of Information requests show that there is no immediate plan to electrify the Barrie GO line;
- Electrification by 2024 was a promise made by the previous Liberal government and the Ford government has failed to meet;
- Residents along the Barrie GO Line will continue to experience the effects of diesel pollution, excessive engine noise and station bells, light pollution, and associated negative effects from living immediately beside a train route that continues to operate on diesel;
- Residents are in favour of expanding public transit infrastructure but are fed up and frustrated waiting for the community benefits that Metrolinx promised to build;
Therefore, we the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to
- Demand that Metrolinx uphold their commitment of delivering fully electric regional trains along the entire GO system.
- Build noise barrier walls around the Bloor-Lansdowne GO station to protect residents from diesel pollution and noise generated from the ongoing use of diesel trains.
- Eliminate the unnecessary use of train bells and horns at the future Bloor-Lansdowne GO Station, including by pursuing Quiet Zone designation or equivalent safety measures (such as enhanced crossing gates, medians, or signage) so that bells and horns are not required to be sounded at this location.
